Basements risk moisture. Use plastic containers (not cardboard), elevate off floor, add silica gel packets, and run a dehumidifier to maintain 40-50% humidity. Check regularly for signs of moisture or mold. When possible, store elsewhere.
Short boxes are more practical—you can actually lift them when full. Long boxes hold more but are unwieldy. Space efficiency is similar. For most collectors, short boxes make more sense. Reserve long boxes for bulk storage you rarely access.
Store in closed boxes in dark spaces. If displaying, use UV-filtering cases and position away from windows. Even indoor lighting causes gradual fading. Items in storage should see minimal light—check them, enjoy them occasionally, then back in the dark.
