Types of Solar Lights

Stake/Post Lights
The classic: a small light on a spike that sticks in the ground along walkways. Most common, most affordable, easy to reposition.

In-Ground/Disk Lights
Sit flush with the ground surface. Modern, minimal look. Better for driveways and patios than garden beds.

Bollard Lights
Taller posts (typically 2-3 feet). More light output, more presence, more expensive. Better for wider paths or accent purposes.

### Brightness Reality Check

Here's the truth: most solar path lights are dim. They're meant to mark the path, not illuminate it like daylight. Expect 5-15 lumens from typical stake lights.

If you need brighter: look for lights with larger solar panels, higher lumen ratings, or consider running one electrical line to a few quality wired lights.

### Solar Panel Location

Integrated panel: The solar cell is on top of the light. Simple but collects less sun if the light is in shade.

Remote panel: The solar panel is separate, connected by wire. More installation work, but you can place the panel in sun while the light sits in shade.

### Battery Life Cycle

Solar lights use rechargeable batteries that degrade over time. Expect 1-2 years of good performance, then declining. Quality lights have replaceable batteries (usually AA NiMH). Cheap lights may not—they're essentially disposable.
