How to Choose a Hammock

A hammock isn't furniture. It's a lifestyle decision. It says "I prioritize relaxation" and "I will read this book" and "Productivity can wait." The right hammock becomes your favorite spot in the yard.

Hammock Styles

Brazilian/Mayan
No spreader bars—the fabric gathers at the ends. Cocoons around you like a fabric hug. Most comfortable for lounging and napping. Harder to get in and out of.

Spreader Bar
Those wooden bars at each end keep the hammock flat and open. Easier to get in, better for tanning, but easier to flip out of. More bed-like, less cocoon-like.

Camping/Parachute
Lightweight nylon, packs small, sets up fast. Not as comfortable as cotton but goes anywhere. Great for parks, travel, and spontaneous relaxation.

### Stand or Trees?

If you have trees 10-15 feet apart: Get tree straps. Better suspension, more natural feel, and no hardware cluttering your yard.

No trees?: Hammock stands work great on patios, decks, and any flat surface. They're portable and don't require permanent installation.

### Material Reality

Cotton: Maximum comfort, natural feel. Must be stored dry—mildews if left in rain. Best for covered porches or fair-weather use.

Polyester: Weather-resistant, quick-drying. Less soft than cotton but survives outdoor life. Good compromise for most backyards.

Nylon: Lightweight, packable, durable. Slippery and less comfortable than woven materials. Best for camping and travel.

### Size Matters

Single hammocks work for most adults but feel cramped for napping. Double hammocks offer serious real estate—room to spread out, toss and turn, or (occasionally) share. Go double unless space is truly limited.
