Yes—oil prevents cracking and maintains beauty. Monthly for regularly used boards, more often for new boards. Use food-safe mineral oil or board butter (mineral oil + beeswax). It takes 5 minutes and extends board life significantly.
For end-grain boards, light cutting is fine. Edge-grain boards will show cut marks. Most people slice cheese and meats elsewhere, then arrange on the board. The board is for presentation, not cutting.
Both work. Marble stays naturally cool (better for soft cheeses in warm rooms). Wood is warmer, traditional, and won't scratch your table. Many hosts have both—marble for formal, wood for rustic.
General rule: 2-3 ounces of cheese/meat per guest needs about 1 square inch per ounce for aesthetic arrangement. For 8 guests with 3 oz each: 24+ square inches, but bigger always looks better. When in doubt, go larger.
