The first burn didn't create a full melt pool. Candle wax has "memory"—it will only melt to the edges of the first burn. Always burn until the entire top liquefies (1 hour per inch of diameter). To fix tunneling, wrap foil around top to reflect heat inward.
Until the wax pool reaches all edges (prevents tunneling) but no more than 4 hours (prevents overheating, wick mushrooming, and excessive soot). The 1-4 hour rule is standard. Let wax solidify completely before relighting.
Poorly made candles can release soot and chemicals. Minimize impact: trim wicks, avoid drafts, choose soy/coconut wax, ensure proper ventilation. High-quality candles burned correctly have minimal impact.
